Why No Pennywise the Clown Costume?

Postby bozotruck » Sat Oct 08, 2011 5:48 pm

Hi Everyone.

So, this year I was sort of wanting to pass out candy and go to parties as Pennywise the Dancing clown from Stephen King's It (The movie version, not the book version). Unfortunately I found out all too quickly that there is no such mass-produced costume. It is very frustrating and I just do not understand why? The effort and cost for producing such an outfit would definitely not be unreasonable and I'm sure it would sell very, very well.
I am aware there was a handmade version that used to be available on Ebay but I'm on a very tight budget and could not pay such a price, at least not this year.

I mean, I just don't get it. There are loads and loads of T.V.-Movie costumes available right now and the one I really had my heart set on this year happens not to be. Can you blame me for being a little frustrated?

On a different note, I wish everyone the most pleasant Halloween and keep the spirit alive! :)

Its probably because the majority of people strongly dislike clowns :D

 I was just thinking, "Because my daughter is praying every night that they never make one because I'd probably end up getting one with several mask versions & scare her senseless."

Probably because it was a made for TV mini series and not owned by a major film/tv company. It's hard to get the rights for things that are so exclusive.

There are some good ones on eBay or you can get patterns. There is a good mass produced one coming out in June I might get to make my own for fun, although the stripes are not the right colors probably due to copyright reasons but could be changed. But that is why I started making costumes for a living years ago as I now no one else would be making New Bloods. So I made it happen myself, and so far about 30 other characters. :)

Pennywise is one helluva getup. The book's description of the clown is pretty badass but that would be hard to pull of black eyesockets with small silver diamonds starting back out!!

Just to let u guys know that James Updegraph / Darkride82 has said that he will be making a Pennywise silicone mask this year, so that's one to look out for.. ;)
He's the guy that has sculpted all the accurate Freddy Krueger silicone masks that I own...
I reckon James will nail down the look of this mask & it should look awesome :D
I'll post up WIP pics of the sculpt on here of your interested ?

Yeah I wondered if he was doing one actually, that is great! Would save me a lot of time with make-up for the costume, and no smudging and running etc. I would be interested, especially if it has those lip pockets like my Part 1 Freddy from him. :)

In the book he was still a clown with big orange pom-pom buttons, white and red grease paint on his face, tufts of orange hair on each side of his head, etc.

However, his eyes were described as black sockets with small glimmering diamonds in each of them. Also, his teeth were described as jagged razor blades sticking out of his bleeding gums.

What most people don't know unless they read the book is that Pennywise is actually a shape shifter, taking the forms of his victims biggest fears (werewolf, homeless man, giant bird).

There is also another big secret about Pennywise's true form - but I really think you should read the book - it's F****** awesome.

The book is far more vulgar than the film, as well. One of the only books I've read on my own "for fun". The kids also perform a pretty....."special" ritual before they go into the sewers. Something that certainly was not in the film.
